Over the last few weeks, I’ve really been struggling with the creation of my 100% whole wheat artisan-style sourdough recipe.
I’d tweak the recipe, do my hardest, and watch as the loaf went flat time and time again. I know I’m getting close to perfecting it, but it’s not quite there yet. And I can only take so many failures in a row before I have to try something else.
I’m so glad I took a break.
Rather than pushing myself to make bread until I was miserable, I took a break from baking for a while, and then I decided to try something completely different. I still had some rye flour and wanted to combine it with my wheat flour, just for fun.
And I ended up with this perfect concoction of flavors: Honey Wheat and Rye Sourdough Sandwich Bread.
Seriously, the flavors just come at me in waves. Whenever I bite into the soft bread, I immediately taste the butter and the honey. And then as I chew, I get the more subtle wheat and rye flavors, followed up by the sourdough tang at the finish.
It makes for a lovely sandwich experience all around. I tried it with turkey, bacon, and tomato, but I know it would make for a fantastic grilled cheese or even a peanut butter and jelly.

Whenever I make a new recipe, I take a lot of photos for my blog. And I mean a LOT. Like at least a hundred.
Most of the time, my photos are blurry and unfocused or overexposed or not quite at the right angle. I do my best to ensure that my blog gets the best photos I can take, however, and I pick just a few of them to go on my website.
So what do I do with the rest?
I submit the next-best photos to Shutterstock and build my photography portfolio.
