Strawberry Watermelon Smoothie

At my house, summer time = watermelon time.

Nothing beats a fresh and juicy watermelon on a hot day. So when watermelons start going on sale at my local store or fruit stand, I always buy a personal watermelon (or two) to enjoy.

One of my favorite methods for using up watermelons is to turn it into a smoothie. Just scoop some melon into a blender*, toss in some frozen strawberries, and add a hint of lime, and I have the perfect refreshing summer drink.

At my house, we call strawberry watermelon smoothies “spa water.” Yeah, we’re not the best at naming things. We call it spa water simply because it feels like relaxing at a spa whenever we drink it. We feel refreshed and rejuvenated and comfortably chilled. It is NOT because it tastes like something you’d scoop out of a water tank at a spa.

The most difficult part of this recipe isn’t the smoothie itself, however. Some days it can be tough to find the sweetest, ripest melon to be the base of my strawberry watermelon smoothie.

I have found a few helpful hints for picking out a good watermelon, though. If you struggle like I do, look for a melon that’s uniform in size and heavy. It should have a golden orange field spot (not white), and the webbing should be large. Your melon should look dark and dull. If it’s shiny, it’s not ripe. When you thump the melon, you should hear a muffled, hollowed sound. Watermelons that make a “ping” sound rather than a “pong” sound aren’t ready.

Once you’ve got the best melon, feel free to blend it up and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 304 Grams Watermelon (2 Cups)
  • 15 Grams Lime Juice (1 Tablespoon)

Instructions

Notes

Some watermelons are juicier than others. Your blender might struggle to mix this smoothie if your watermelon isn’t very juicy. You can thin out the smoothie with a couple tablespoons of water if needed.
