I make a lot of sourdough bread for my bread blog, Breadbythehour.com. However, even I need a break from bread every once in a while.
Whenever I have a lot of sourdough starter discard, I make waffles for my family. This sourdough discard waffle recipe is both tasty and tangy. Because of the delightful sourdough flavor, I prefer to pair these waffles with a tart berry syrup and whipped cream (though it tastes great with traditional maple syrup as well).
I love making sourdough discard waffles, especially when topped with a fruit syrup. But what do you think? Do you prefer more traditional waffles with maple syrup? Or do you have other favorite toppings that compliment the sourdough flavor even better? I’d love to hear what you think in the comments below!

Wonderful, soft, yummy waffles!
Thank you so much!
Really tasty and wouldn't change a thing! 4 grandkids (9-13 years old) gobbled them all up and asked for seconds. Had to make another batch for my husband and me.
Wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing.
Loved it. Light and fluffy. Instead of milk I used heavy whipping cream. My husband said my kitchen smelled like a breakfast diner and they were the best waffles he'd ever had.
Oh that sounds absolutely lovely! I never thought about using whipping cream - I'll have to try it next time. Thank you.
Easy and delicious. Thanks for the recipe.
Wonderful! Thank you so much and you are welcome, too.
So tasty. My toddler’s first waffles! I prefer this recipe
over traditional waffles for sure. We like using caramelized green apples on top with maple syrup and whipped cream. Going to try the soft rolls and then pretzel recipe. Thank you so much
Oh the caramelized apples and whipped cream sound divine! Thanks for sharing.
Wonderful! Came out delish . I added wild blueberries. Freezing a made batch . Thank you
Oh blueberries sound delightful! Thank you for sharing.
I'd been dumping my spent sourdough starter down the garbage disposal, but I searched for "spent sourdough recipes" and came across this. Wow! The whole family agrees that these are tastier than our go-to waffle recipe. Really delicious!
Yay! I'm so glad you enjoyed them.
Just made and ate this morning…delicious. Paired mine with some yogurt w/Chia seeds and then added strawberries and blueberries …and just about of real maple syrup. great substitute for whipped cream
Oh that sounds like a yummy breakfast. Thank you so much for sharing!
