New Self Portrait Doodle for 2024

How are we in February already? I feel like I just barely wrote my New Year’s resolutions for 2024, and now January has come and gone. I guess I’m overdue for another self portrait doodle, so here you go.

This picture happened during several nursing sessions – whenever my right arm was free enough to draw. I had to work in small spurts to accommodate a very wiggly newborn. My nursing pillow made the job easier, but it still took me a lot longer than I would have liked from start to finish.

Drawing feels a bit foreign to me these days. It’s been a few years since I’ve picked up a pencil. I kept putting my art on the back burner in favor of other projects. Now, I’m stuck on the couch regularly, so I figured I’d ease back into doodling. Maybe with more time, I’ll feel more comfortable with my style.

I Get Younger Every Year

I have to admit, I’m a sucker for progress pictures. It’s fun seeing how things progress. Back when I was working hard to lose baby weight, I took an initial before picture. When I came close to reaching my goal, I took an after picture – and it was amazing to see how my body shape had changed.

With my latest self portrait doodle, I had a lot of fun comparing it to drawings I did four years ago. My hair shading and my line work has improved. My proportions have gotten better too.

There are a few things I did a bit differently this time, that I already want to change. It’s funny how quickly I go from enjoying my latest piece to itching to have another crack at it. For example, I have a round face and large eyes – but I made my face just a bit too round and my eyes a bit too large, so I look more like a little kid than an adult. The expression on my face is lacking in personality – it’s not offensively bland, but it doesn’t really tell a story. I think my previous portraits did a better job of that, surprisingly, so kind of a step backwards there.

I guess by assessing my art, I can see how far I’ve come and I can see where I want to improve. It’s nice to see that I’m still a traveler on an art journey.

More Doodles to Come

With more time to draw, I can safely predict that I’ll share more doodles in the future. Maybe in a few months, I’ll post another self portrait doodle, just to see how things are going.

If you want to see some of my other artwork, don’t forget to check out my artistic creations category. That’s where I’ll share all my drawings, paintings, and similar works.
